Sikeleli Travel & Expeditions

How It All Started

The Ponter family founded Sikeleli Travel and Expeditions in 2014 with the desire to deliver truly authentic travel experiences to our guests.

From our deep familial roots in both Africa and Asia, Sikeleli has grown to include destinations throughout the world. We curate travel to continents and cultures that inspire us and that we have immersed ourselves in over the years.. thus we started as Sikeleli Safaris and, by demand of our repeat guests, evolved into Sikeleli Travel & Expeditions.

We serve our guests from offices in Canada, Zimbabwe and South Africa as well as working hand in hand with trusted partners in Australia, New Zealand, Japan, China and SE Asia, all of who share our conservation values and have an in-depth knowledge of these vast and beautiful areas.

At Sikeleli Travel & Expeditions, one of our core values is wildlife and habitat conservation, with a special emphasis on rhino protection. We are deeply committed, both as a family and a company, to supporting wilderness conservation efforts in Africa. We carefully choose local travel partners who share our commitment to conservation, and we collaborate with the following organizations, which are doing tremendous work in the field.

The African Wildlife Foundation carries out incredible work in protecting Africa’s habitats and endangered species, while empowering indigenous communities to build a more sustainable future. Their outstanding reputation consistently earns them a top rating with CharityWatch. This organization is close to our hearts at Sikeleli Travel & Expeditions, and one of our team proudly serves as director of AWF Canada. Please take a look at their website to learn more about their conservation efforts.

We are also strong supporters of the International Anti-Poaching Foundation (IAPF). The IAPF was founded by Damien Mander, a former Australian special forces sniper, and Jane Goodall serves as Patron. Visit their excellent website to find out more about their work. Some of us at Sikeleli have had the privilege of meeting Damien on several occasions, and he truly puts his heart and soul into saving wildlife on the brink of extinction. You won’t regret taking a few minutes to watch his inspirational TED talk about protecting rhinos, and ultimately, wildlife.

Imire Rhino Orphanage

Another organization we actively support, both as a family and a company, is the Imire Rhino & Wildlife Conservation in Zimbabwe. You can read about their black rhino breeding and release programs as well as volunteer opportunities on their website.

Alex & Adam

travelled to

Zimbabwe & South Africa

Adam and I had such a great trip. I have filled out the survey, but wanted to tell you personally that we LOVED the Shongewe Lookout– thank you so much for recommending it! All of the tour guides/drivers through Wild Horizons were super nice, knowledgeable and professional. Victoria Falls was absolutely stunning and while we had a great day overall in Chobe, we did not get to see all of the animals we wished to see, so we will definitely be doing another safari in the future! And of course, Cape Town was amazing– we had great weather and had a really nice time with Adam’s family there. Thank you so much for all your help 🙂

Frequently Asked Questions

I’ve never done this before: what’s the process for booking a safari?

We understand that booking a safari can be an unfamiliar process. Check out our easy 5 Step Guide to get an overview of what happens next.

Steps in Booking a Safari

Do you offer disabled access-friendly safaris?

This entirely depends on the type and severity of the condition. We will always do our best to accommodate all members of a safari group, but certain camps are equipped with disabled access features whilst others are not. Please get in touch to let us know more about any conditions or specific requirements you may have.

Can I make my own itinerary?

Absolutely. We specialize in personalized tailor-made safari itineraries. It’s what we do. Just contact us to start the process. We’ll listen to your needs and give recommendations based upon your specific interests, timeline, and budget. Our select clientele know that they can rely on us to craft the perfect safari for them.

Can I take my children on safari?

Yes, you can! We think taking your whole family on safari is a wonderful way to share all of the excitement and often life changing experiences that an authentic safari experience has to offer. Some lodges do have an age restriction, however many of our lodges actively welcome children and have a number of child-friendly activities on offer. We have specifically crafted family safaris designed for parents travelling with kids six years of age and older.

How far in advance should I book a trip?

We recommend booking as far in advance as possible to ensure all individual requests can be met. Generally speaking, for safaris longer than a week in length, we would recommend booking at least 3 – 12 months in advance. This is especially important for travellers booking private safaris.

Why Africa?

A luxury safari in Africa is one of the few places you can still experience raw adventure in amongst ancient and undisturbed landscapes. These unique vistas remain largely untouched and teem with wildlife unique to Africa. A true get-away from the modern world. Africa has so much to offer; from the thunderous Victoria Falls to the serene Okavango Delta; from the vast Serengeti plains full of herds of wildebeest to the undisturbed and pristine beaches of Mozambique.
