Botswana

Sparsely-populated and 70% covered by the Kalahari Desert, Botswana is a top destination for thrilling big game encounters and a sense of wild remoteness. The otherworldly Makgadikadi salt pans are a stunning contrast to the waterways of the Okavango Delta and Chobe National Park. Highlights include mokoro — local canoe — excursions through the delta, by helicopter over this vast area, the prolific carnivore and cat populate and large herds gathering around viewing hides. Known to many as the jewel in the safari crown of Africa, this ‘place of plenty’ is the penultimate safari destination.

Congo

The Republic of Congo may be the smaller of the two countries that comprise the Congo in west-central Africa, but it’s no longer in the shadows of neighboring DRC. Enjoying peace and stability after decades of conflict, its impressive wildlife and affordable eco-tourism are drawing attention. The charming capital, Brazzaville, is a colorful mix of French and Congolese influences, from the fashionable street “sapeurs” to the stunning green roof of St. Anne’s Basilica and the bright fabrics sold at Poto Poto market. With the legendary Congo River as a backdrop, riverside strolls and a sunset cruise offer incredible views. From here, head north to track lowland gorillas through the rainforest at Odzala-Kokoua National Park or explore Ndoki-Noubale’s untouched wilderness. After the northern jungles, Point Noire’s Atlantic surfer beaches and Conkouati-Douli’s unique coastal park are a delightful contrast. With tourism just beginning to emerge, the “little Congo” and its wildlife hold many adventures for visitors, making now the perfect time to explore.

Ethiopia

Located in the historically significant Horn of Africa, Ethiopia’s millennia of history and natural, cultural and religious diversity combine for a fascinating destination. From the jagged mountains of Simien National Park—home to rare wolves, ibex and gelada—to the colorful sulfur lakes and salt flats of the Danakil Depression, the contrasting landscapes are stunning and often dreamlike. The medieval rock-carved churches at Lalibela and the ancient obelisks at Aksum—rumored home of the Ark of the Covenant—provide a glimpse into Ethiopia’s distant past. Explore culture, communal cuisine and world-famous coffee in Addis Ababa, and in Harar Jugol, the walled city of mosques, join one of the legendary Hyena Men as he feeds hyenas from his mouth. Rich in natural and cultural wonders, Ethiopia has been mostly overlooked by travelers, but it won’t stay undiscovered for long.

Kenya

Breathtaking Kenya, home of the first safaris (Swahili for “journey”), continues to evoke the quintessential African safari experience. While its expansive savannah is a familiar image, Kenya’s incredible geography spans from the majestic Rift Valley to the dazzling Indian Ocean. Of course, 4x4 game drives and the Big 5 are top draws, the noble Masai Mara and the Masai people, hot air balloons, treetop canopy tours and horseback safaris all offer unique perspectives of the stunning scenery. Don’t forget dazzling beaches and the mysterious island of Lamu make for an amazing honeymoon destination.

Malawi

Despite its small size, Malawi features one of the world’s largest lakes, dramatic mountain peaks and stunning grasslands. A less-traveled safari destination, wildlife parks here have a distinctly romantic feel, due to their unspoilt wilderness. Picturesque Likoma Island, off the eastern shore of Lake Malawi, offers some of the world’s best fresh-water diving and snorkeling along with sailing, kite surfing, quad biking and cultural visits.

Morocco

Exotic and vibrant Morocco is a feast for the senses, with its colorful spice stalls, loudspeaker calls to prayer, smells from tanneries and sweet-and-savory dishes. As you travel across Morocco, landscapes shift from coastline to the Atlas mountains to the Sahara Desert, and fishing ports and walled cities give way to remote Berber villages. Marrakech, both old world and cosmopolitan, is a nice introduction to Morocco. Get lost in the labyrinthine souk and shop for Berber rugs or colorful slippers. Outside the walled city, the Yves Saint Laurent Museum and Jardin Majorelle next door are design masterpieces. A few hours south of Marrakech is the walled city of Taroudant or “Little Marrakech”. This Berber market town is a good starting point for Atlas Mountain hikes. Highlights are the souk, the old lanes of the kasbah and Palais Claudio Bravo, the former residence of the artist. Cool down for a few days by the Atlantic in Essaouira, a charming seaside town. Moroccan hospitality is legendary, so you may wish to plan for a few extra days and have enough time to accept the many invitations for mint tea and conversation.

Mozambique

Unique marine life, expanses of white beaches and warm Indian Ocean waters make Mozambique the perfect finale to any safari. The islands off the coast are a beachgoer’s paradise, with miles of unspoilt beaches and turquoise waters that provide luxurious privacy. Enjoy a variety of watersports, such as scuba diving and snorkeling, or unwind on land with golf, tennis and spa time. Mozambique has a most interesting and sad history and in the last 20 years has worked hard to rebuild itself as one of the finest beach destinations in Africa

Namibia

Boasting five distinct geographical landscapes, Namibia is one of Africa’s most varied and photogenic countries to explore. The stunning red Sossuvlei sand dunes in the Namib Desert and the mythical Skeleton coast, with its shipwrecks and whalebones, offer up dreamlike landscapes. The desert-adapted elephants of Damaraland and the ancient rock art here are not to be missed. Take a hot air balloon above the dunes, visit the shipwrecks and seal colonies along the coast, go quad biking and appreciate the unique wildlife found here.

Rwanda

Small, landlocked Rwanda in east-central Africa may be known as the “land of a thousand hills”, but it also features breathtaking lakes, volcanoes, forests and savannah. After struggling to overcome its devastating past, Rwanda is a country on the rise. In the capital Kigali, the Genocide Memorial is a powerful tribute to the tragedy and enormity of the 1994 genocide. Now one of Africa’s safest cities, Kigali boasts a thriving arts and food scene. Rwanda’s incredible parks and wildlife are national treasures. Visitors can go gorilla trekking or hike to a crater lake in the lush rainforest of Volcanoes National Park; spot chimpanzees and take a high canopy walk in Nyungwe Forest; and go on a Big Five safari in the savannah of Akagera. Other highlights include the rolling hills of the tea plantations and Lake Kivu’s stunning scenery and islands. The people of Rwanda have bravely rebuilt their country, now considered the safest in Africa, and it’s a welcoming destination filled with awe-inspiring wildlife and beauty.

South Africa

Cosmopolitan city breaks in Cape Town, the foodie capital of Africa, exciting safaris in private luxury reserves, lush vineyards and top surf spots — South Africa has it all. Identified as one of the world’s “megadiverse” countries, each of South Africa’s nine provinces holds different delights. This is the perfect destination for travellers who want to mix culture with adventure and experience a bustling food and wine scene, historical sites and Big 5 viewing in one country.

Tanzania

Vibrant and multi-cultural Tanzania is home to world-renowned safari parks The Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Tarangire as well as this, stunning tropical beaches in Zanzibar and Pemba. The annual Great Migration of two million wildebeest, zebras, and Thompson gazelles crossing the Serengeti is one of the modern Seven Wonders, and the front-row view here is breathtaking and life changing. Game drives, animal tracking on foot, horseback safaris, hot air ballooning and a number of outdoor activities will keep any of our guests delighted beyond words.

Uganda

Though landlocked in east-central Africa, Uganda is the birthplace of the legendary Nile and home to beautiful sandy beaches. The ice-capped peaks of the Rwenzori Mountains and the tropical Ssese Islands in Lake Victoria showcase Uganda’s incredible natural diversity, while its national parks offer glimpses of rare and captivating wildlife. Half of the world’s population of mountain gorillas live in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, and a gorilla trek to see them in the wild is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Chimpanzees and 12 other primates inhabit the rainforests of Kibale National Park, and the unique tree-climbing lions and big game at Queen Elizabeth National Park make for excellent game drives. The spectacular waterfalls and Nile cruise past hippos and crocodiles at Murchison Falls are scenes taken from The African Queen. In Kampala, explore Uganda’s cultural heritage at the Kasubi tombs, Ndere Cultural Centre and busy outdoor markets. Now considered one of Africa’s safest and friendliest countries, Uganda greatly benefits from tourism, which empowers its communities and wildlife conservation efforts.

Zambia

A relatively untouched and new safari destination, Zambia is home to an appealing network of national parks, often less visited and wilder than their counterparts in Botswana, Tanzania and Kenya. Zambia is dominated by a high plateau, with most camps found along the banks of the Zambezi river, where elephants, hippos and buffalo congregate. As well as this the walking safaris of the South Luangwa or the tree-climbing lions of the Kafue Busanga Plains make for one of the most incredible safari experiences ever. Livingstone is also a part of Victoria Falls, so a safari just in Zambia can be one of the most memorable our guests can have. Enjoy action-packed white water rafting or micro-flights, world-class fishing and relaxing sunset cruises down the Zambezi River.

Zimbabwe

With its remarkable national parks, diverse wildlife and many World Heritage sites, Zimbabwe offers something special for every traveller. From the spectacular, thundering Victoria Falls to the impressive balancing rocks at Matobo National Park and its dense population of rhino, there’s no shortage of natural wonders and abundant wildlife to behold. Adrenaline activities, walking safaris in Mana Pools, the savannahs of Hwange, ancient rock paintings in Matopos, birding and rhino tracking are just a few of Zimbabwe’s many highlights. With these remarkable national parks, diverse wildlife and many World Heritage sites, Zimbabwe offers something special for every traveller... there is so much more than just the Victoria Falls!
