The Mexico Art Week experience: DAY 1- Sunday February 2nd

Pickup at Mexico City international airport

After all attendee’s flight details are confirmed, we will arrange airport transfers for groups of up to 4 and 10 adults, in either 2022 Lincoln Navigator SUVs or 2022 Mercedes Benz Sprinter. On average, it takes 45 minutes to navigate through immigration, bag retrieval and customs inside the Mexico City airport. Once exited, transfer to hotel takes 45 to 60 minutes.

Kindly share how much luggage each attendee will bring so we can determine which vehicle to assign them to, based on passenger to luggage capacity.

7:00pm Welcome Dinner at Botanico under Morenita. To kick off this exciting artistic adventure, an exquisite evening of elegance and artistry awaits with a welcome reception at Botanico. Amidst the lush, verdant courtyard, this exclusive soirée promises an unforgettable first evening in one of the world’s most dynamic art scenes.

Located in a restored art deco mansion in Condesa, Botánico is the first solo project of chef Alejandra Navarro, an alum of internationally-acclaimed and 2-Michelin Star Quintonil. Gallery visit, artist studios and catered lunch

Saenger Galería was established in 2019 and has quickly become a significant player in the city’s contemporary art scene. The gallery is dedicated to fostering close, transparent relationships with artists, collectors, and other art world stakeholders, promoting both emerging and established talent from Mexico and abroad. With a diverse exhibition program that includes solo and group shows, Saenger Galería emphasizes material experimentation and conceptual depth. It also engages in institutional collaborations, publishes art books and participates in international art fairs such as Zona Maco, Miami Untitled and Dallas Art Fair.

Inside the gallery we will showcase Australian artist Mark Whalen along with a guided walk-through of two artists studios:

Javier Peláez is a prominent figure in the contemporary art scene, known for his intricate exploration of the interplay between nature and technology. His works, characterized by meticulous detail and vibrant color palettes, delve into themes of ecological interconnectedness and the impact of human innovation on the environment. Peláez’s unique visual language bridges the gap between scientific observation and artistic interpretation, making his pieces resonate on both intellectual and emotional levels. Celebrated in international exhibitions, his contributions continue to influence and inspire a new generation of artists and environmentalists alike.

Robert Janitz (Germany, 1962) is known for his unique painting style involving flour or wax mixed with oil on raw linen. Janitz taught at the University of Paris VIII and the Higher School of Fine Arts in Cherbourg from 1994 to 2008. He debuted with a solo exhibition at Gallerie Valleix in 1996 and has since held over 30 solo shows worldwide. He entered the Latin American art scene with exhibitions at Casa Gilardi, Diego Rivera ́s Museo Anahuacalli and Galería Saenger. His works are featured in several art collections and publications, including titles such as “Robert Janitz: Made in New York 2020-2010.” Represented by galleries in New York, Istanbul, Berlin, London, Seoul, and Mexico City, Janitz now resides in Mexico City after living in New York from 2009 to 2020.

What started in 2019 as a tortilla shop with a casual taquería expanded into a beautifully designed corn-centric restaurant in Polanco. On this day we will have Siembra Tortilleria do a casual taco brunch catering for our group, on the Saenger Gallery rooftop. The original tiny Polanco taqueria offers amazing tacos and street food snacks prepared with high-quality ingredients and attention to detail. Ostentation is nowhere to be found, yet flavor and vibes are abundant.

2:30pm-3:30pm Proyectos Monclova gallery visit Proyectos Monclova is the most important Mexican art gallery showcasing contemporary art from both emerging and established artists. The gallery hosts exhibitions, participates in international art fairs, and collaborates with various artists on unique projects. Monclova has emerged as a significant powerhouse in the Mexican art scene, effectively contributing to Mexico’s presence on the global stage and actively engaging in esteemed international art fairs. 3:30pm Transfer to next stop

4:00pm-5:00pm Bosco Sodi studio visit Known for his richly textured, vividly colored large-scale works that focus on material exploration, the creative gesture and the spiritual connection between the artist and his work, Bosco Sodi seeks to transcend conceptual barriers. His recently-opened studio is an architectural masterpiece by Alberto Kalach and features multiple floors of painting, sculpture and installation exhibitions. Sabino 333, Santa Maria de la Ribera.

7:00pm Dinner at Ciena under Morenita. While Ciena has the feel of an all-day café, it has an impressive menu of small plates that can have you continuously ordering for an entire evening, especially with its coffee bar, aperitivo menu and variety of cookie options. 10:00am-11:15am Museo Jumex museum visit Jumex Museo Jumex in Mexico City holds a significant place in the contemporary art scene, serving as a leading platform for the exhibition, study, and dissemination of modern and contemporary art. Established by the Fundación Jumex Arte Contemporáneo, the museum is renowned for its dynamic programming and diverse collection that includes works by both renowned international artists and emerging local talents. Its commitment to fostering cultural dialogue and artistic innovation makes it a pivotal institution in Latin America’s art landscape, bridging local and global artistic communities while promoting critical discourse and creative exploration.

12:00pm-1:00pm Mariane Ibrahim gallery visit “It’s not a trend; it’s a momentum. Every time you do a Black African show, it is more successful than the one before it” says Mariane Ibrahim, the Kenya-born, Chicago-based gallerist. Ibrahim came to Mexico City to do what she does best: represent contemporary art from Africa and the African diaspora within the white spaces of the curatorial world. Ibrahim has emerged as a pivotal figure through her eponymous galleries in Chicago, Paris and now CDMX. Her innovative approach and dedication to fostering underrepresented voices have not only enriched the global art landscape but also redefined the boundaries of contemporary art, making her a vital force in the industry. 1:00pm-2:15pm Lunch at Panuco 36 under Morenita. Panuco 36’s cuisine is inspired by a series of taste memories adapted to Mexican flavors, without losing the essence of its place of origin. The use of local ingredients, traditional and modern techniques are a reflection of the personality of their gastronomic proposal. Its also located within the Mariane Ibrahim gallery property, overlooking a romantic courtyard covered in lush greenery. Rio Panuco 36, Cuauhtemoc.

DAY 3 Continued – Tuesday February 4th

3:00pm-4:30pm Espacio Baltico studio visit Espacio Báltico is a collective art studio dedicated to the development and exhibition of projects that explore the material relationship with the environment. Báltico seeks the convergence of disciplines, techniques, and skills to encourage the exchange of experiences. In addition to residencies, the space serves as a venue for workshops, conferences, and any events fostering dialogues around art, architecture, and design. Located in the Popotla neighborhood on the west of CDMX, it maintains the essence of the former factory of electrical measuring devices where it came to be situated. Mar Báltico 24, Nextitla.

7:30pm Dinner at Tigre Silencioso under Morenita. Mexico City loves Baja California, and El Tigre Silencioso delivers what Chilangos crave. Chef David Castro Hussong brings his signature cooking to the menu, with homey Baja flavors like a chile relleno taco prepared with pasilla chiles, oxtail with noodles, and tuna with avocado and a touch of wakame. The portions are small, so order a few starters and mains to share, and expect tons of wines from the best producers in Baja California. 7:00pm Dinner at Taverna under Morenita. This may just be one of the most beautiful restaurants in all of CDMX. It’s housed in a historical hacienda from 1905 that’s been restored and most of the restaurant is candlelit. The atmosphere at Taverna is ideal for a special celebration that extends into the night. Most of the Mediterranean-inspired dishes are roasted in a wood-burning oven. Standouts include dates stuffed with chorizo and wrapped in jamon serrano, and a beet carpaccio with a dressing that should be sold everywhere. Established in 1959 within a modest one-meter square space in Centro Histórico, Mr. Guillermo Buendía and Mrs. Amelia González inaugurated “El Huequito”, a taquería specializing in tacos al pastor. Over time, this humble beginning has evolved into a thriving franchise, boasting multiple sit-down locations throughout the city, renowned for serving textbook-perfect tacos al pastor.

4:00pm-5:00pm Cecilia Barreto

Cecilia Barreto is a visual artist and a professor at UNAM. In her most recent body of work, she elaborates on a trip to the state of Sonora in northern Mexico, where the largest extraction areas of lithium are located. Considered the white gold of the 21st century, lithium is used in the production of electric cars and electronic devices, and linked to the notion of clean energy in the environmental crisis.

Barreto aims to decelerate the flow of information from data, images, and financial reports of large companies, particularly those with Canadian and European foreign capital involved in exploration and mining extraction in Latin America. Barreto had participated in over 80 collective exhibitions & 5 individual shows in Mexico and abroad. Centro Historico.

7:30pm Dinner at Contramar under Morenita. Contramar, the buzzy, vibrant, and enduringly popular seafood restaurant from chef and restaurateur Gabriela Cámara, is the ideal spot for a great meal, either in the sweeping dining room or out on the sidewalk. From the classic tuna tostadas, whole fish a la talla, to the hibiscus margaritas and impeccable service, everything at Contramar celebrates Mexico City’s unique cosmopolitan energy and cultural heritage. 10:45am-11:45am Casa Azul Frida Kahlo museum visit Renowned Mexican artist Frida Kahlo was born, lived and died in Casa Azul, today a museum. Built by Frida’s father, the house is littered with momentos and personal belongings that evoke her long, often tempestuous relationship with husband Diego Rivera and the leftist intellectual circle they entertained. Since 2012, the exhibition Appearances Can Be Deceiving: The Dresses of Frida Kahlo places the focus on Kahlo’s image and famous style, displaying many of the dresses and spine-straightening corsets. The intersection of her disability, fashion sense, artistic themes and fame is a worthy exploration. Londres 247, Del Carmen, Coyoacán.

12:00pm-1:00pm Christian Abusaid studio visit Christian Abusaid is a transformative artist whose dogma revolves around art as a new consciousness. His technique creates a tactile experience through the use of textile pigments and voluminous textures. The predominant blue used throughout is a homage to our blue earth origins. The Mexico City-based Colombian artist pursues the greatest art enigma: beauty. His pieces move us through a diverse colour gradient asking us where does beauty truly come from? Does it exist by itself? Abusaid ́s works ultimately lead us into different degree of understanding through the preservation of ancestral knowledge and pre Hispanic symbolism. 1:45pm-3:45pm Lunch at Lago/Algo under Morenita. An architectural marvel in Chapultepec Park recently was transformed into both a gallery and a restaurant promoting sustainability. In reimagining the original structure, local architecture firm Naso removed the old finishes, revealing a Brutalist bunker that was rechristened Lago Algo. Lago is a farm-to-table restaurant and Algo (Spanish for “something”), is an exhibition space that inaugurated in Art Week 2022. Bosque de Chapultepec, Pista El Sope S/N

DAY 6 Continued – Friday February 7th

3:45pm-5:00pm Self-explore Algo Gallery

The gallery boasts more than 45 multimedia works from 27 international artists, including James Turrell, Alicja Kwade, and artist trio Troika. A biomorphic chalk mural by Yann Gerstberger fills the cylindrical foyer, which leads in one direction to the restaurant area, where visitors will find murals by Jorge Méndez Blake and Gabriel Rico. In the other direction, a stairwell rises to a light-flooded promontory that features Eduardo Sarabia’s La Conquista de México, a series of ceramic vessels perched upon boxes, the tops of which are painted with different game boards and the sides of which display logos from Mexican political parties. 8:00pm Dinner at Máximo Bistrot under Morenita. Máximo Bistrot celebrates seasonal ingredients thanks to sustainable gardens and crops in and around Mexico City. Chef Eduardo García positioned himself as a star of the city’s food scene after an already impressive career at Le Bernadin in NYC as well as Pujol. The menu fuses classic Euro techniques with traditional Mexican ingredients, creating explosive flavour combinations paired with friendly but spot-on service. Álvaro Obregon 65 bis, Roma Norte.

12:00pm-1:00pm OMR Guided Visit gallery visit For over three decades, OMR has been a prominent force in Mexico’s contemporary art scene, presenting more than 400 exhibitions and earning a respected reputation. OMR recognizes the importance of bridging the global art market with Mexico, presenting an exciting opportunity to strengthen connections that drive contemporary art forward. Córdoba 100, Roma.

1:30pm Lunch at Con Vista al Mar under Morenita. Con Vista al Mar draws inspiration from the shores of Mexico to showcase seafood tacos from the Pacific and Caribbean. CDMX locals often enjoy seafood tacos for a casual weekend lunch, especially during the spring and summer. The menu does a great job of mixing seafood and inland ingredients, so try the Chilango taco, prepared with in-house shrimp longaniza and chicharron (pork rinds), or the Campeche taco – grilled octopus topped with habanero salsa and fried beans. 3:30pm-4:30pm MASA gallery visit 8 artists from Luhring Augustine (Sarah Crowner, Christina Forrer, Mark Handforth, Ragnar Kjartansson, Richard Rezac, Mohammed Sami, Salman Toor, and Rachel Whiteread), in conversation with 6 MASA’s designers (Héctor Esrawe, Adeline de Monseignat, Panorammma, Ewe Studio, Brian Thoreen, and Héctor Zamora). MASA’s gallery space was originally built in the 19th century when the homeowner organized eclectic gatherings that brought together artists, writers, and other notable figures. Continuing in this celebratory spirit and tradition, MASA and Luhring Augustine’s collaboration activates new dialogues between disparate voices across generations and genres. Joaquin A. 7:30pm-10:30pm Dinner at Pujol under Morenita. The flagship restaurant of chef and owner Enrique Olvera has long been one of the country’s most celebrated dining destinations. The 2-Michelin Star PUJOL is constantly buzzing with a fleet of elegantly dressed servers in black, attracts a crowd eager to savor its culinary delights. While some come for the taco omakase, the soul of this restaurant lies in its seasonal tasting menu. Tradition and innovation blend seamlessly in dishes like scallop ceviche with egg salad or grilled Baja rockfish with peanut squash purée and sherry foam.
