Namibian Odyssey: A Travel Expert’s Expedition Through Africa’s Land of Contrasts

Posted on April 2, 2025, featured in Experiences

Karen and Fungai, two dedicated travel experts from Sikeleli Travel, recently explored Namibia to personally experience its diverse landscapes and carefully selected accommodations. Their shared passion for African safaris and commitment to authentic experiences guided their evaluation of everything from towering dunes to wildlife havens. Here’s what they have to share with us:

Our Namibian Journey

The moment we landed in Windhoek, we knew this expedition would be special. Though our time in the capital was brief, The Weinberg Hotel made an excellent first impression with its connected restaurants and comfortable rooms – the perfect place to refresh before heading into Namibia’s more remote treasures.

Sossusvlei: A Desert Wonderland

Sossusvlei’s landscapes unfold like nothing else on earth. Our stay at Kwessi Dunes felt like we were nestled within the sand itself. The star beds in every room offered uninterrupted views of the Milky Way stretching across the Namibian night sky – an experience that makes you feel simultaneously tiny and connected to something immense.

The hot air balloon flight over the dunes at sunrise was absolutely worth the early wake-up call. Floating silently above those massive red dunes as they’re bathed in golden morning light creates memories that stay with you forever. We were even blessed with a full rainbow arching across the desert landscape! After landing, we enjoyed breakfast in the desert before zooming through the sands on 4-wheelers.

Don’t miss Dead Vlei during your visit. Walking among ancient blackened trees standing like sculptures against the white clay pan, surrounded by towering orange dunes, creates one of the most striking and surreal landscapes imaginable.

Swakopmund: Where Desert Meets Ocean

Swakopmund captivated us with its fascinating character – German colonial architecture right on the Atlantic coast, yet still connected to the desert. The fog rolling in creates a mysterious atmosphere unique to this coastal town.

During our stay, we experienced both the marine cruise and the Sandwich Harbour tour. Honestly, we wouldn’t strongly recommend the marine cruise as it gets quite hectic when wildlife is spotted, with all boats rushing to the sightings.

The Sandwich Harbour tour, however, was absolutely worth it! Seeing massive sand dunes literally plunge into the ocean creates a dramatic landscape that must be experienced firsthand. The 4×4 ride up and down the dunes provides an exhilarating adventure – hold tight, but embrace the thrill!

Damaraland: Land of Ancient Landscapes and Desert Giants

Damaraland captivated us with its endless landscapes dotted with granite kopjes. Due to the much-needed rains, we weren’t able to explore the riverbeds for the famous desert-adapted elephants or climb deep into the kopjes to view the ancient rock art, but this didn’t diminish our incredible stay at Mowani Mountain Lodge with its breathtaking vistas and gravity-defying balancing rocks.

We were fortunate to spot desert-adapted elephants moving silently through the arid landscape – a sighting that reminded us why we fell in love with African safaris in the first place. The dramatic scenery of this region, with its rust-red earth and striking geological formations, creates a backdrop unlike anywhere else in Africa.

Etosha South: Wildlife Encounters

Anderssons at Ongava provided the perfect base for exploring Etosha. One memorable moment involved waiting patiently as an elephant took its time walking directly in front of our vehicle – nature operates on its own schedule!

We visited in March after the rains, which isn’t prime game viewing season. The grass was high and animals more dispersed, but we still enjoyed rhino sightings! For travelers wanting abundant wildlife, we’d recommend the dry season from June to October.

Etosha East: Predator Country

The eastern section of Etosha delivered exceptional wildlife experiences. Witnessing a cheetah hunt was unforgettable – that heart-pounding moment when it accelerates from stalking to sprinting stays with you forever. Lions lounging in the grass, rhinos visiting waterholes… this area felt authentically wild.

Onguma Tented Camp became a quick favorite. Sipping morning coffee while watching zebra and antelope gather at the waterhole just meters away creates perfect safari moments. The canvas walls let you hear every nighttime sound – from distant lions to nocturnal visitors passing by, connecting you deeply to the natural environment.

Okonjima: Conservation in Action

Our final stop at Okonjima provided a hopeful conclusion to our journey. We witnessed a rare interaction between a brown hyena and a leopard that had even our guide on the edge of his seat!

Beyond the incredible wildlife sightings – large herds of zebra, wildebeest, and giraffe – what truly impressed us was learning about the AfriCat Foundation’s conservation work. Understanding their efforts to protect big cats while experiencing the African wilderness firsthand reinforced why connecting people with these precious wild places matters so much.
