The Anniversary Atlas: Ten journeys, ten reasons to go. Whatever kind of couple you are this year, here is where Sikeleli would send you.

Posted on July 21, 2026, featured in Experiences

Ask anyone at Sikeleli what actually decides where a couple goes for an anniversary, and the answer has very little to do with how many years they have been married. It has almost everything to do with what they are craving right now: quiet or challenge, stillness or scale, somewhere entirely new or somewhere that already means something to them.

So instead of another straightforward destination list, here are ten answers to the only question that actually matters: what kind of couple are you this year?

 Kyoto, Japan

Early in a marriage, there is a kind of gentle uncertainty to how two people move through the world together, and there is no country more attuned to rhythm and quiet ceremony than Japan. In Kyoto, the pace announces itself immediately: temple gardens raked into stillness, sliding doors that never make a sound, a tea ceremony where every gesture has already been decided by centuries of practice. Spend a week here, and you learn something about patience, together.

FOR THE COUPLE STILL LEARNING EACH OTHER’S RHYTHM

 Bali, Indonesia

Some years call for adventure. Others call for absolutely nothing, and Bali does nothing better than almost anywhere Sikeleli sends couples. Mornings unfold slowly across rice terraces the colour of pale jade, afternoons dissolve into long lunches and longer massages, evenings arrive warm and entirely unhurried. It is the anniversary equivalent of exhaling.

FOR THE COUPLE READY TO BE A LITTLE BIT BRAVE

 Republic of Congo

There is a particular kind of closeness that only comes from doing something genuinely hard together. In the Congo Basin, trackers lead couples for hours beneath a canopy of trees centuries old, before the reward: eye contact with a lowland gorilla family in a clearing that feels, briefly, like the beginning of the world. Few anniversary trips ask this much of two people. Fewer still give this much back.

FOR THE COUPLE WHO JUST NEED TO SLOW DOWN

 Namibia

There is something quietly grounding about vastness, about standing somewhere big enough to put your own concerns back into proportion. Namibia does this better than almost anywhere on earth: dunes that rise taller than buildings, a coastline so empty it has been wrecked and abandoned for a century, silence so complete you can hear your own footsteps in the sand. Couples come back from Namibia talking less about what they saw and more about how much clearer everything suddenly felt.

FOR THE COUPLE WHO WANT VASTNESS, AND A LITTLE PERSPECTIVE

Hoi An, Vietnam

Some places wear their age well, and Hoi An is one of them. Lanterns glow over the old town every evening, the river fills with candlelit boats, and centuries of trading history sit quietly behind every shopfront and tailor’s door. It is a town built for slow evenings and long dinners, the kind that make a marriage with real history of its own feel perfectly at home.

FOR THE COUPLE WHO LOVE A PLACE WITH HISTORY

Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe & Zambia

Locally, Victoria Falls is called Mosi-oa-Tunya, the smoke that thunders, and there is genuinely nothing else quite like standing at the edge of it. The spray rises hundreds of feet into the air, catching the light at dawn until the whole gorge seems to glow. Some anniversaries deserve one enormous, unforgettable moment rather than a week of small ones. This is that moment.

FOR THE COUPLE WHO WANT ONE BIG, UNREPEATABLE MOMENT

Sri Lanka

A single-note holiday is easy to plan and easy to forget. Sri Lanka refuses to be single-note: colonial forts give way to Buddhist temples, tea-covered hill country drops down to a wildlife-rich lowland interior, and the coastline glows gold at both ends of the day. For couples who want a trip with real range, one that keeps surprising you right up until the flight home, this is the island that delivers it.

FOR THE COUPLE CRAVING LAYERS

Masai Mara, Kenya

Every single evening in Kenya’s Masai Mara, the savannah turns a deep amber red as the sun drops, herds moving through the glow like something out of memory. Rise before dawn for a hot air balloon over the plains, and you will understand why Sikeleli keeps sending couples back here, year after year, for exactly this kind of trip. Some places are beautiful. This one performs for you, twice a day, without fail.

FOR THE COUPLE CHASING GOLDEN HOUR, LITERALLY

Morocco

The Sahara does very little, and does it extraordinarily well. Dunes shift from copper to bronze to something close to fire as the sun sets, kasbahs glow warm against the dusk, and the silence out among the dunes is so complete you can hear the sand move. For couples who want their anniversary to slow all the way down to a single, spectacular hour of light each day, there is nowhere better.

FOR THE COUPLE WHO WANT BEAUTIFUL LIGHT AND TOTAL STILLNESS

South Africa

Some anniversaries call for range: a country that can do wine estates and wild coastline and big-cat safari and genuinely excellent restaurants, all inside a single, well-planned itinerary. South Africa is the rare destination that can hold an entire relationship’s worth of interests without ever feeling like a compromise. For couples who have earned the right to stop choosing between the trip they want and the trip their partner wants, this is where both happen at once.

FOR THE COUPLE WHO’VE EARNED SOMETHING THAT DOES IT ALL

People ask us what the best anniversary destination is, as if there’s one answer. There isn’t. The right trip for your fifth anniversary and your twenty-fifth might be exactly the same place, or nothing alike, depending on what the two of you actually need right now. We stopped trying to have one answer years ago. We just ask better questions instead.

Where you land is still up to you

These are starting points, not fixed itineraries. Every Sikeleli journey is still built around the two people taking it, not a formula. But if you have ever wondered which of these sounds most like you this year, that is usually where the conversation with us begins.
