Sikeleli Travel Designer Karen has just returned from a thrilling three-nation journey through Rwanda, Tanzania, and Kenya. Crossing paths with mountain gorillas, witnessing vast herds in the Serengeti, and experiencing the finest lodges across East Africa, she’s eager to share her adventures.
Here’s her story:
“Day 1-3: Rwanda – Where My Heart Found Its African Rhythm
Landing in Kigali, I was instantly struck by how immaculately clean the city is. But the real magic began during my drive to Volcanoes National Park with my guide Freddy. The journey itself was a revelation – winding through misty hills, passing villages where children in neat school uniforms waved enthusiastically. Freddy, with his gentle manner and encyclopedic knowledge, shared fascinating stories about Rwanda’s young population and their vision for the future.
The highlight?
My trek to meet the Igisha gorilla family. After two hours of hiking through bamboo forests, my heart nearly stopped when our guide pointed out the first silhouette. There, just meters away, sat a family of 35 gorillas, including several playful infants who seemed as curious about us as we were about them. The hour we spent with them passed in what felt like minutes – a profound experience that words struggle to capture.
For accommodations, I discovered some absolute gems. The Bishops House took my breath away with its perfect blend of luxury and warmth – the kind of place where every meal feels like a special occasion and the staff remember your coffee preferences from day one. The Retreat offered an oasis of tranquility, while Amakoro’s beautiful grounds made me want to extend my stay. Even the more modest Virunga Inn surprised me with its comfortable rooms and genuinely warm hospitality.
Days 4-10: Tanzania – Where Wildlife Stories Unfold
My Tanzanian adventure began at Arusha Coffee Lodge, where I savored possibly the best breakfast of my trip while watching the morning mist lift over the coffee plantations. My guide James became not just a wildlife expert but a wonderful storyteller, making every game drive an adventure.
The properties here each told their own story. Lemala Mpingo Ridge perches like an eagle’s nest above Tarangire, offering views that made my jaw drop. At Gibbs Farm, I found myself postponing departure just to soak in more of their farm-to-table experiences and the colonial charm. The Elewana Manor transported me to a different era with its grand architecture and manicured gardens.
But it was in the Serengeti where the magic truly happened. At Siringit Serengeti, I enjoyed the view over the iconic plains from their unique camp gym – aptly named ‘The Jungle Gym’. Lemala Nanyukie balanced luxury with authenticity so perfectly that even the resident giraffes seemed impressed. Serengeti Bushtops was a lovely surprise – after exciting game drives, it was wonderful to come back to such a welcoming team and enjoy dinner while sharing stories about the day’s adventures.
Days 11-14: Kenya – The Grand Finale
Crossing into Kenya’s Masai Mara felt like entering another world entirely. Sala’s Camp set the tone with its blend of authentic safari atmosphere and understated luxury – their family-style lunches became a highlight of my day. At Elewana Sand River Mara Camp, I found myself living out my ‘Out of Africa’ dreams, complete with a claw-foot bathtub overlooking the savanna. Hemingways Ol Seki topped it all off with its stunning views and excellence in every detail.
Before flying home, I spent a heart-warming morning at the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s Elephant Orphanage in Nairobi. Watching the baby elephants play and hearing their rescue stories was the perfect way to conclude my journey – a reminder of why we work so hard to protect these incredible creatures and places.
A Personal Note
This journey wasn’t just about ticking off luxury lodges or wildlife sightings. It was about discovering the soul of East Africa – from the mist-covered mountains of Rwanda to the endless plains of the Serengeti and the rich traditions of the Masai Mara. Each place touched me in different ways, and I can’t wait to share these experiences with our guests.
Whether you’re dreaming of a gorilla encounter, yearning for the thunder of the migration, or seeking the perfect mix of adventure and luxury, I’d love to help craft your journey. Let’s create your own East African story together.”
